January 31, 2015 Show

January 31, 2015 @ 3:57 pm

This week, after a brief rant about Romney's decision not to run again in 2016 -- and a few words about anti-vaxxers -- we go back to the archives for a terrific interview with human rights lawyer Layli Shirani, who's is representing a young Muslim man from California who was railroaded by the FBI and is serving a prison sentence for plotting terror attacks against the US.

Then we'll speak with University of Minnesota sociologist Joe Soss about his study which found that Bill Clinton's 1990s welfare reforms created a system that's rife with racial biases.

January 23, 2015 Show

January 25, 2015 @ 12:02 pm

This week, we'll catch up with Rebecca Schoenkopf, the editrix of Wonkette. Rebecca recently had an epic midlife crisis, and she also watched the State of the Union speech.

Then we discuss the intrigue surrounding Bibi Nentanyahu's "breach of protocol" with Josh Ruebner from the US Campaign to end the Israeli Occupation.

Finally, we'll be joined by RH Reality Check Executive Editor Jodi Jacobson to talk about the GOP's new challenge to Roe v. Wade -- and why anti-choicers can't win an honest argument about abortion rights in America.

We have a musical theme this week: Quirky covers.

Playlist:
Lissie: "Bad Romance"
Sid Vicious: "My Way"
Flying Lizards: "Summertime"
William Shatner: "F&@k You!"

January 17, 2015 Show

January 18, 2015 @ 9:57 am

We begin this week's show with a gripe about the media accepting the narrative that the Paris attacks were intended to silence free speech. One has to believe that international terror organizations are run by people who have no clue about Western political culture to buy that claim.

Then we'll speak with Mike Tomasky of The Daily Beast about the race for 2016, and a few other items in the news.

Finally, we'll be joined by Stuart Smith, author of Crude Justice: How I Fought Big Oil and Won, and What You Should Know About the New Environmental Attack on America, to talk about his epic legal battles with the oil industry in Louisiana.

Playlist:
Buckwheat Zydeco: "Ya Ya"
Leadbelly: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"
Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie: "When the Levee Breaks"
