May 28, 2016: LOL James O’Keefe; Do Sanders’ Supporters Favor His Policies?

May 28, 2016 @ 12:24 pm

This week, we're joined by LA Times reporter Matt Pearce, who parachuted into Minnesota to report on a terror trial of three Somali-Americans and ended up with a much more interesting story of a refugee community trying to carve out a piece of the American Dream.

Then we speak with Princeton University political scientist Christopher Achen, who co-authored a piece in the NY Times this week arguing that people tend to choose a candidate based on their "inherited partisan loyalties, social identities and symbolic attachment," rather than the candidate's policy positions.

Then Ed Kilgore, the NY Magazine columnist, drops by to talk about the State Department's IG report on Hillary Clinton's email brouhaha. We keep that one short and to the point.

And finally, Heather "Digby" Parton joins us to point and laugh at right-wing dirty trickster James O'Keefe, who recently managed to sting himself when he failed to hang up his phone before articulating his scheme to burn George Soros' Open Society Foundation.

Musical theme this week is TV theme-songs!
Playlist:
CBS Orchestra: "Theme from Hawaii-5-0"
Sammy Davis, Jr.: "Baretta's Theme"
Jerry Scoggins: "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Beverly Hillbillies)
The Blues Brothers: "Rawhide"
Mike Post: "Hill Street Blues"

May 21, 2016: Will What Happened in Vegas Stay in Vegas?; Border Patrol Gone Wild

May 22, 2016 @ 11:30 am

This week, we'll be joined by veteran Nevada political journalist Jon Ralston for his take on what went down during the Democratic Party's chaotic state convention. It led to a week of recriminations, but who was really to blame?

Then we'll speak with Cynthia Pompa, a field organizer for the New Mexico chapter of the ACLU. The organization filed a complaint with DHS this week alleging that Customs and Border Protection agents routinely abuse people going about their business in the Southern border region -- and routinely get away with doing it.

Finally, Joshua Holland shares some of his concerns about this seemingly endless Democratic primary contest.

Lucinda Williams: "2 Kool 2 B Forgotten"

May 7, 2016 @ 1:26 pm

This week, Stan Collender, AKA The Budget Guy, recalls his experience going up to Capitol Hill to give the Senate Budget committee a piece of his mind.

Then we'll speak with Rick Perlstein, who's devoted a career to studying the American conservative movement and thinks we need to rethink some of our assumptions in the era of Donald Trump conservatism.

Finally, we'll be joined by Michigan State University political scientist Corwin Smidt, who has studied independent voters and says that they're a lot less independent than most people believe.
